I’m also moderating a panel all about pitching creator-owned comics:
FRIDAY 3pm ROOM 703
WRITERS UNITE! PITCHING YOUR CREATOR-OWNED COMICS

Creator-owned comics have grabbed the imagination of the comic-reading community all over again and publishers are looking for fresh ideas from a new generation of talent. Listen closely as creators Ed Brisson (Comeback), Ray Fawkes (One Soul), John Layman (Chew) and moderator Jim Zub (Skullkickers) discuss pitching their comic series to publishers and offer advice on how to climb to the top of the treacherous submission mountain along with comic writing techniques and amusing anecdotes.

Dragon Spirit Launches on Shifty Look!

Over on Bandai-Namco’s ShiftyLook website, a brand new webcomic series has just launched.

Jim writing fantasy comics? Shocking, I know, but believe me when I say this one feels different from both Skullkickers and Pathfinder.

Dragon Spirit: Legendary Tales of Mythical Adventure Chronicles is a sarcastic and ridiculous approach to the kind of old school sword & sorcery story that permeated fantasy video games of the 80’s. It’s self aware and self deprecating.

With beautiful line art by Steven Cummings (Uglies Graphic Novel, Vent) and moody coloring by Espen Grundetjern (Street Fighter) it’s going to slay monsters and gather treasure with a new strip posted up every Sunday!

Quick Gen Con Wrap-Up

Got in the door after a 9 and a half hour drive home from Indianapolis, so forgive me if this is brief.

In short, Gen Con 2012 was everything I hoped it would be. Tons of amazing people, fun gaming and record sales at the Tracy Hickman / Schlock Mercenary / Skullkickers booth. We had an absolute blast.

Thank you to Howard Tayler and Tracy Hickman for giving me a space to exhibit at. Your friendship and encouragement made this all possible.

Thank you to the Kokomo Irregulars, Tracy’s incredible staff, for running the booth and creating the most organized and welcoming con space imaginable.

Thank you to Andrew Hackard, Monica Valentinelli and everyone else at Steve Jackson Games for rocking out Munchkin-Skullkickers and promoting it so well at the show.

Thank you to Andrew Huerta, Erik Mona, Lisa Stevens, James Sutter and everyone else at Paizo for making the Pathfinder #1 launch so successful.

And, last but never least, thank you to the many, many Skullkickers, Munchkin and Pathfinder fans who came by to visit, buy books and get stuff signed. The response to all the hard work that’s gone into the new Pathfinder series was overwhelmingly positive. Seeing return customers from last year who were back for another volume of Skullkickers was also a real joy.

The Gen Con crowd is truly our bedrock and I’m incredibly grateful for all the support. Click on the pic below for more photos from the show:

Pathfinder #1 Reviews!

The first issue of the Pathfinder comic series is now out in the wild and reviews are rolling in. Here are some highlights:

Newsarama: “Taken as a whole, this is one entertaining read and a more than welcome entry in the woefully small fantasy comic genre. Dynamite has a strong team on this book. 8/10”

Unleash the Fanboy: ” the first issue of Pathfinder is everything you want as a beginning to a fantasy epic. 4/5″

eXpert Comics: “I was lucky to get to see a preview of issue number one, and boy is it awesome. Not only do you get the comic itself, which is excellent, but you get a map of the city the comic takes place in as well as descriptions of all of the places of interest in the city.”

Comic Book Bin: “I would highly recommend ‘Pathfinder’ to anyone who enjoys fantasy, or just a good read. 8.5/10”

One Geek Nation: “Andrew Huerta’s illustrations and Ross Campbell’s colors jump out of the panels, successfully opening readers’ eyes to the amazing Pathfinder world.”

iFanboy: “The story had a great mix of action and comedy”…”I loved this comic.”

Sci-Fi Pulse: “The dialogue in this book is pretty sharp and fun at times. And the action is thick and fast.”

Fanboy Buzz: “The dialogue is all very natural and the storytelling/pace is top notch. A lot could be said for how well this issue was written.”

Frickin’ Awesome: “Dynamite Publishing’s Pathfinder doesn’t focus on the theoretical enticements of RPGs, but instead on using the game to create an adventure story that comes hard and fast with succinct, enjoyable characterization and hearty action.”

Fanboy Comics: ” What really makes this book work are the characters. He somehow took these awesome creations that were just a stat block and a few pictures and has crafted really interesting and flawed people out of them.”

Silver Snail Blog: “…the characters are actually very well-crafted and likeable; this is actually kind of tough to pull off when you’re trying to fulfill the major RPG stereotypes.”
