Zub at the Calgary Expo 2015!

CalgaryExpoLogo

Hard to believe that 2015 is the 10th anniversary of the incredible Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, but it is and, for my tenth year in a row, I’ll be there promoting my comics along with some of my dearest friends and collaborators. It’s one of my favorite shows each year and this special anniversary edition is looking to be the best one yet.

I’ll be set up at Artist Alley Table X20 beside Edwin Huang (Skullkickers) and Max Dunbar (Dungeons & Dragons: Legends of Baldur’s Gate).

I’ll have convention exclusives (including a limited number of copies of the Wayward Vol. 1 limited edition hardcover left over from ECCC), and a special Calgary Expo variant of Wayward #6 with art by Max Dunbar and Tamra Bonvillain.

I have a new pin-up piece in the Calgary Expo Artbook this year:

In addition, the Skullkickers appear in a special 6 page short story created for this year’s Calgary Expo Program Guide. Rex and Rolf storm the convention in their search for a Baby Thool and chaos ensues. If you’re at the show make sure you check it out.

Zub Calgary Expo Pin-Up 2015 – Step by Step

As part of the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo each year there’s a special artbook that includes pin-up illustrations from many of their guests. This is the show’s 10th anniversary and I’m proud to say I’ve attended each and every show and have a pin-up in every artbook they’ve produced so far.

Thankfully, this year is no exception.

The theme for 2015 was “Time”, as appropriate for an anniversary celebration, so I put together a piece using a time traveller with a nod to the H.G. Wells classic story “The Time Machine”. Here’s a walkthrough of the digital process for my piece:

JimZub-CalgaryExpo2015PinUp-01

STEP 1: Rough – After trying a few different thumbnail compositions I settled on this gesture drawing. It’s pretty loose but set up the key staging of the characters and the proportion of the dinosaur versus our happy time travelling protagonist.

JimZub-CalgaryExpo2015PinUp-02

STEP 2: Work-Up – Working digitally, it was easy to separate each part onto its own layer so I could focus on construction and expression, tightening up details while trying to keep the energy of the original gesture.

JimZub-CalgaryExpo2015PinUp-03

STEP 3: Line Art – A third pass nails down the line art, including fine details on the time machine and thick to thin lines to help visually separate forms.

JimZub-CalgaryExpo2015PinUp-04

STEP 4: Color – I wanted to keep the rendering animated-looking and simple across the board so I stuck with mostly flat colors and a simple light source. Some of the line art was also colored/lightened to help blend it in more with the rest of the scene.

JimZub-CalgaryExpo2015PinUp-05-CloseUp

Here’s a close-up of the time traveller and his machine. I had a lot of fun getting his expression down and building the golden-tubed time machine at the proper angle. I can’t wait to see the piece in print.

Here’s a series of links to all my previous pin-ups for the Calgary Expo artbooks. Collect ’em all 🙂

Wayward and Weird Japan Video Now Online

At Emerald City Comicon Zack Davisson (professional translator and mythology expert) and I talked about Japanese myths, spirits, and the strange, along with how I evolved some of those for my creator-owned series Wayward.

Jenna, one of our fans, recorded most of the panel and has posted it online. Thanks, Jenna!

Convention Horror Stories Panel Audio Now Online

ConventionHorrorStories

Jamie Coville recorded audio from this year’s infamous Convention Horror Stories panel from Emerald City Comicon that Katie Cook (My Little Pony) and I were on. If you’ve always wondered about what it’s like to meet people at more than a dozen conventions a year and what kind of trouble we can get ourselves into, this one’s for you. Please keep in mind that this audio is most definitely not safe for work and includes quite a bit of swearing.

This Weekend: Toronto Comicon!

TorontoComicon-2015

This weekend, March 20-22, I’ll be a guest of the Toronto Comicon, set up for the show at ARTIST ALLEY TABLE P-22. It’s my first comic convention of the year and I’m excited to be kicking the 2015 season off with a hometown show.

I have a limited number of advance copies of WAYWARD Vol. 1: String Theory, WAYWARD #6, and SKULLKICKERS #31, so make sure you swing by to grab a copy before the regular release date. I’ll also have trades, comics, and sketch covers for a bunch of my other series, including Samurai Jack, Dungeons & Dragons: Legends of Baldur’s Gate, Conan-Red Sonja, and more!

If you’re in the Greater Toronto Area and can make it out to the show I hope to see you there!

(PS: I might be late on Friday as I have to head right from my teaching day job down to the convention centre, so between crazy Toronto traffic and set-up I might be delayed.)

Totoro-Inspired Wayward Variant Cover

Our pals at Third Eye Comics in Annapolis, Maryland are putting together a special event to celebrate International Tabletop Day on April 11th and I’ll be there signing and sketching up a storm. To help commemorate the event they’re also putting together a store-specific variant cover of WAYWARD #6 you can only get at their shop.

When Steve at Third Eye contacted me about the event and variant, he had a specific concept in mind – Since Wayward is focused on Japan, let’s do a playful riff on a Studio Ghibli image using Wayward. As soon as he suggested it, I knew what we should do.

TotoroPoster

The original My Neighbor Totoro poster is beautiful, iconic, and wonderfully cute. I asked Steve Cummings and Tamra Bonvillain to do up a version with Ayane and a giant cat waiting at a bus stop in the city and here’s the amazing result:

Wayward06-00-3rdEyeVariant

The Japanese on our cover loosely reads “My Neighbour Wayward”.

If you live anywhere near Annapolis, Maryland make sure you mark Tabletop Day on your calendar and come out for the big event. You can get this Ghibli-inspired special cover, meet me, and try out board games and card games aplenty. A day full of games, comics, and tons of fun!

And, if you’re unable to attend the event in person, you can pre-Order WAYWARD Vol. 1 from Third Eye Comics and get their Totoro variant cover for FREE!
