Zub at New York Comic Con 2016!

October is here and that means it’s time for New York Comic Con! Once again I’ll be set up in Artist Alley and look forward to seeing friends and meeting readers. In addition, several of my collaborators will be at the show, so you’ll be able to get multiple signatures on some of my books!

Creating great villains is essential for making great stories, whether you love their every appearance or just love to hate them. Award nominated duo Comfort and Adam, joined by Jim Zub and Dirk Manning lead this seminar in two parts: first, you’ll learn what makes great villains in both writing and in art. Then, Comfort & Adam will invite the audience to participate in creating a new villain which will be designed and drawn live.

Zub Hosting Master Seminar on Comics Experience

I’m thrilled to announce that I’m working with Andy Schmidt at Comics Experience on a Master Seminar session all about organizing and managing comic and other creative projects. Discussion will include financial analysis, budget-building, finding collaborators, putting together an effective pitch, and approaching publishers.

There are many resources available for creators when it comes to art and writing, but understanding how to effectively build a project and carry it through to completion without losing your mind or your savings, that’s not something I’ve seen as much of, so when Andy approached me about hosting a session covering that hard to find material I agreed.

Past Comics Experience Master Seminars have been with industry luminaries including Brian Michael Bendis, Christos Gage, and Klaus Janson. It’s a pleasure to be brought on board to talk about the pitching and production process.

Click here for all the details, but here’s a bullet-point rundown of how it works:

• Held Saturday, October 29, 2016 from 10:00 AM Eastern Time until approximately 4:00 PM Eastern Time with a one-hour break for lunch.
• You will learn from both lectures and demonstrations presented by Jim Zub.
• You will be a part of a private Q&A with Zub and host Andy Schmidt.
• You will learn about financially planning a comic book project.
• You will learn how to find great collaborators.
• You will learn how to be a great collaborator.
• You will learn about the different avenues to publication.
• You will learn how to prepare a project to pitch it and how most effectively to pitch a project.

This Seminar is $295. For Creators Workshop members, a $50 discount is offered on the forums.

You’ll have access to a recording of the seminar for two full weeks after it’s held—including the Q&A portion.

Zub at Rose City Comic Con

It’s time for another Fan Expo, the largest pop culture convention in Canada! I’ll be set up at TABLE P-29 selling books, signing, chatting, and sketching all four days (September 1-4).

Zub at Gen Con 2016!

This week I’m heading to Indianapolis, Indiana for Gen Con, the best four days in gaming. Tabletop, RPGs, board games, card games, and our little booth jammed full of comics.

Howard Tayler (Schlock Mercenary) and I are once again set up at the show and we’ll have a large selection of our wares. If you’re going to the show, swing by BOOTH #1343!

I’ll have Skullkickers, Wayward, Samurai Jack, and Dungeons & Dragons comics available along with variant covers, sketch covers, and more while supplies last. Get comics signed, get gifts for friends, chat with me about comics, gaming, and all kinds of other good stuff.

Another year, another San Diego Comicon. This year is my 15th SDCC and I’m excited to see friends and readers alike in the midst of the pop culture maelstrom. This Friday, June 24th, I’ll be signing at Coliseum of Comics in Orlando. There are multiple stores, but I’ll be at the Millenia location!

Zub at the Calgary Expo 2016!

Hard to believe 2016 is the 11th anniversary of the incredible Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. Once again, I’m proud to let everyone that I’ll be there promoting my comics! It’s one of my favorite shows of the year.

I’ll be set up at Artist Alley Table X-14 and will have trade paperbacks, sketch covers, and other variants on hand.

Zub Calgary Expo Pin-Up 2016 – Step By Step

As part of the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo each year there’s a special artbook that includes pin-up illustrations from many of their guests. This is the show’s 11th anniversary and I’m proud to say I’ve attended each and every show and have a pin-up in every artbook they’ve produced so far.

Thankfully, this year is no exception.

The theme for 2016 was “Fairy Tales & Classic Monsters”, so I put together a piece using a Jack and the Beanstalk as my inspiration. Here’s a walkthrough of the process for my piece. Click on each one to see a larger version:

STEP 1: Thumbnail – Sometimes it can be helpful to start really small and think only in terms of broad shapes and forms to create a strong composition. I thumbnailed out this quick sketch with a Col-Erase blue pencil and liked the possibilities it presented.

STEP 2: Rough – Scanning the thumbnail and working over top of it digitally in Photoshop, I added structure and gesture to the base shapes and it’s starting to come together.

STEP 3: Work Up – Fading back the other layers, I digitally draw over top of it again and add in character expression and details while trying to keep the energy from the earlier steps intact.

STEP 4: Final Lines – Opening up the work up version in Manga Studio, I digitally ink the final lines bit by bit, clarifying some of the looser forms and using thicker or thinner lines to help visually separate major areas and indicate depth.

STEP 5: Final – Bringing the lines back into Photoshop, I add color to give the whole thing mood and texture. I keep the rendering pretty simple to give it an animated appearance.
