Zubby Newsletter #176: Omen-Bound

SURPRISE #1: My next creator-owned comic series has just been announced – OMEN-BOUND, a dark fantasy series co-created with artist Alberto Alburquerque launches in March 2027 at Image Comics!

SURPRISE #2: Alberto and I will have a special limited OMEN-BOUND PREVIEW EDITION comic available this week at our tables at New York Comic-Con (Artist Alley Tables A-33 and I-33) while supplies last!

Head over to Image Comics for the full press release and watch the OMEN-BOUND announcement trailer right HERE:

In a dark medieval-fantasy world, a skilled group of warriors and priests from a strict religious order have been tasked with escorting a dangerous prisoner back to the “Fayral”, an untamed primal realm of perilous elemental energy.

Their sacred charge is a mercurial and mysterious princess of the fay folk and, the closer the group gets to the land that powers her magic, the more difficult it will be to complete their quest. Worse still, at each step of this perilous journey secrets will be revealed about themselves and the history of their world that may save or damn them all.

Pretty sweet, right? This has obviously been in the works for quite a while and I’ve been keeping it a secret. Once I confirmed that I’d be at this year’s New York Comic-Con, I knew it was a great opportunity to get Omen-Bound announced there and start beating the drum for our big launch in 2027.

When my writing career started to gain traction, I told myself I’d always have commercial and creator-owned projects running simultaneously, betting on myself just as much as building credits with existing properties, but it hasn’t always worked out that way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been wonderful, but creator-owned projects tended to get put on the backburner while other deadlines loomed. This whole year, I’ve been feeling the creator-owned itch and want to bring everything I’ve learned over the past 8 years since Wayward finished.

Omen-Bound is dark fantasy, mysterious and emotional with an old school Dungeons & Dragons-style ensemble party and evocative narration familiar to readers enjoying my run on Conan the Barbarian. To say this is a passion project for our team is an understatement. I can’t wait for you to see how far Alberto is pushing himself on every single page and, when that’s coupled with Misty’s colors and Marshall’s lettering, it really is magic.

Image has always had the best deal in creator-owned comics and it’s also where I feel most at home charting my own path. Building this new series with Alberto, colorist Misty Coats (Skullkickers) and letterer Marshall Dillon (Street Fighter), dear friends I’ve worked with before, it makes the whole project even more special.

I’ve said it many times, but every creative project is a time capsule. When I look at Skullkickers, Wayward, Glitterbomb, or Stonestar I know where I was and who I was. It’s time to make new memories and show people what we’re capable of in the here and now. I hope you’ll join us on this grand adventure!

In 2027, Fate Tests Us All.

Zubby Newsletter #174: The Gamble That Paid Off

Savage Sword of Conan (2018) #7-9: The Gambler

7 years ago, I was proud to have a Conan solo writing credit in Savage Sword of Conan (2018) #7-9 and thought it would be my last chance to be a Bard for the Barbarian. I never imagined how that story, The Gambler, would start a domino effect that would change my career in such incredible ways.

I’d written Conan twice before, in the Dark Horse Conan-Red Sonja mini-series with Gail Simone and in Avengers: No Road Home with Mark Waid and Al Ewing, but both of those were co-written team-ups and I was itching to show what I could do on my own in the classic Hyborian Age setting.

Editor Mark Basso approved The Gambler and Patch Zircher drew the hell out of it.

Conan is tricked into a gambling hall surrounded by mysterious enemies and his life may be forfeited on the turn of a card. I went for a Weird Tales vibe, hearkening back to the pulp roots of the character.

That story grabbed the attention of Fred Malmberg, the owner of Conan. He really liked that old school feel and so, what I thought would be my last chance instead became an audition for more. They asked me to write a crossover with multiple Robert E. Howard characters, which became Conan: Serpent War.

Conan: Serpent War, my first attempt at a ‘Howardverse.’

I envisioned multiple crossover mini-series over multiple years, a pulp epic that would incorporate as many of Robert E. Howard’s creations as possible, but it ended up being only 4-issues with a teaser at the end showing Kull the Conqueror.

Jason Aaron was writing the flagship monthly Conan series and was known for doing long runs on characters so I thought it could be many years before I might get the chance to write Conan again. Instead, Jason only had 12 issues planned so Marvel was almost immediately looking for a new writer.

I was offered the Conan flagship monthly series and my first issue, Conan the Barbarian #13, came out in February 2020.

After two issues, Marvel halted publishing on almost all their titles due to the pandemic and we were caught in that deep freeze midway through my first story arc. After an 8 month gap, Conan the Barbarian #15 came out in December 2020 and, with the world understandably focused on more important things, we lost most of our sales momentum. I managed to hold on for 9 more issues, but the Marvel series came to an end with Conan the Barbarian #25 in September 2021.

My first two and last two Conan the Barbarian issues at Marvel: 2020 and 2021.

I never had the chance to do any signings or conventions as the series came out during lockdown, leaving me with a weird feeling like it all happened in a dream. Fred Malmberg was sorry I didn’t get to go further and told me to stay in touch.

5 months later in February 2022, Fred told me they were negotiating a creative partnership with Titan Books and looking for pitches to relaunch Conan. It would be a “bake-off” competition with multiple writers. I told my wife I probably wasn’t even going to submit a pitch because there was no way I’d get it. No one would want a new Conan series written by the same guy who just did it and it didn’t sell. She bristled at how quickly I was giving up.

“Well, you’re definitely not getting it with an attitude like that.”

At the same time, Roberto de la Torre reached out to me after I bought a commission piece from him and we started chatting over Facebook Messenger. He’d gained a cult following amongst dedicated Conan fans for his stunning Hyborian Age commissions and had drawn a couple stories for Marvel but hoped to do more. Rob and I started talking about possibly doing a creator-owned series together, essentially doing a Conan-style pastiche.

A few days later, I put together an unusual pitch for Heroic Signatures/Titan: Things I’d learned about Conan and the fanbase, what seemed to be missing, and a plan for the future. It involved an olive branch for lapsed fans and a way for new readers to get on board.

To my absolute surprise, Fred put his chips on me. My pitch was the one they approved. I knew we were starting on our backfoot and had a lot to prove to a fanbase that, at best, thought they knew what my Conan would be like. We needed an undeniable artist to launch the series and Rob was it.

We waited until Free Comic Book Day May 2023 to relaunch. That gave fans time to miss the book, time for research, and time to build a publishing buffer on an ambitious monthly title.

Conan the Barbarian #1 arrived August 2023 and the New Age of High Adventure has been roaring ever since.

Conan the Barbarian (2023) #1-4: Bound in Black Stone

I was promised 12 issues to establish a new baseline for the Conan publishing line and, when we hit multiple printings on #1-4, we negotiated a longer contract to deliver a much larger version of the ‘Howardverse’ plan I had in mind back during Serpent War.

I proposed a 3-year/36-issue plan, and each year would culminate in an event.

When I verbally pitched the bi~ig story, they told me it was too much for 36 issues and wouldn’t have enough room to breath.

“How about 4 years instead?”

Since that would be a 48-issue commitment, I said we might as well round it up to 50 and, thankfully, they agreed.

This week, CONAN: TIDES OF THE TYRANT-KING #1 arrives in stores. It’s the third of four pillar event mini-series that make up the mythic story arc we’ve had in the works for a long, long time.

Conan: Tides of the Tyrant-King #1-4 connected variant covers by Jesús Merino.

Conan the Barbarian has changed the course of my creative career in ways I never could have imagined.

So few people get to write these iconic characters and no one gets a second shot at it after the first time failed. That it happened at all is unreal, and the second chance being a hit is impossible squared.

I got hit by lightning twice and caught it in the bottle on the second strike.

Cimmerian September Delivers Big Adventure

Last week, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #16 arrived in stores and the response was strong.

This week, CONAN: TIDES OF THE TYRANT-KING #1 arrives and Thulsa Doom’s evil returns.

Next week, CONAN THE BARBARIAN #35 arrives, continuing our swashbuckling Cursed Shores Beyond story arc.

If you’re not already reading, make sure you get caught up with this year’s FREE COMIC BOOK DAY issue (which is also free online) and see what all the excitement is about.

A New D&D Comic Series

As the guy who’s written more D&D comics than anyone else, take my word for it- Dark Horse’s new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS comic series that launches in November starts the adventure strong!

Written by my friends Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, it’s ambitious, fun, and uses both lore and legendary characters with the confidence of a veteran Dungeon Master bursting with inspiration.

Today is the last day you can pre-order the first issue at your local comic retailer, so don’t miss out.

• A couple weeks ago, I linked to an overview of Nate Simpson‘s comic Nonplayer and the way it lost momentum, so it’s only fair that I should also link to Nate’s personal reply to that video, talking about the work, his career, things he’s learned and hopes for the future.

• Sonny Hurrell‘s recipe for NY Halal Cart-style Chicken and Rice popped up in my feed, I made it and it was absolutely amazing. I can count on one hand the number of times Stacy has finished eating dinner before me and she absolutely wolfed down this dish. I didn’t make the spicy red sauce covered in the video (I swapped in sriracha), but if you’re not down for spiciness just skip that step and you’ll be golden. Highly recommended!

Zubby Newsletter #173: Quite Cromulent

I drew Conan on a coffee cup at Ottawa Comiccon.

Ottawa Comiccon was a nice time, much more relaxed than the hustle and bustle of Fan Expo Canada, but that’s okay. I saw some family and friends, met a bunch of readers who hadn’t headed south for the big show, and chatted all about story ideas and creative consistency with Stacy as we made the trek to and from our nation’s capital.

We drove home Sunday night to make sure we were ready to start the week on a productive note, busting away on writing deadlines. There’s a lot to get done between now and Canadian Thanksgiving, and my To-Do List will prove critical over the next 3 weeks.

Savage Sword of Conan #16 cover by Joe Jusko.

In stores today: SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN #16, our Tides of the Tyrant-King tie-in issue and I wrote it all! 64 pages of magazine-sized, black & white bombast, 3 tales ready to pounce with powerful pulpy panels from 3 potent partners:

• Nicola Scott unleashes dark visions of Conan’s past, including a moment readers didn’t realize was happening between the panels of Bound in Black Stone.

• Chris Campana brings his crisp storytelling in a supernatural-sent sequel to the Robert E. Howard cowboy classic The Vultures of Wahpeton.

• Sean Izaakse shows us a wondrous hidden side of Zuleika, the quiet servant girl in Robert E. Howard’s famous weird tale Skull-Face.

Getting to build and deliver another exciting ‘Howardverse’ event with our team is a joy. I’m neck-deep in research reading right now for my late 2027 story outlines and it’s both intimidating and amazing to realize that Conan the Barbarian #45-50 and our fourth event mini-series will bring all these threads together soon.

An excerpt from my intro in Savage Sword of Conan #16.

Conan the Barbarian #32 Reviews

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #32 arrived in stores last week, a done-in-one sword & sorcery story called “A Sacred Task”, built in the style of the original Robert E. Howard Conan stories from Weird Tales magazine. What did the critics think? Let’s find out-

• 9 Panel Grid: “Really cool, really great artwork here…You think it’s just action, but no, there’s always Lovecraft and horror aspects that get interwoven into the mysteries of this book. And that’s what this issue does in a really perfect way.”

• Comic Book Addicts: 8.8/10 “A haunting, brutal, and beautifully illustrated Conan issue that gives nostalgic fans classic sword-and-sorcery power while giving new readers an accessible road into the Cimmerian’s world.”

• Comic Book Clique: 9.5/10 “Zub is the master of the Howardian tale—his narration and dialogue are sparse and to the point, never using more or fancier words than necessary, much like Conan himself….The artwork by Braithwaite is always as sharp and true as Conan’s blade, and this issue is no exception. “

• Comic Buzz: 10/10 “Lovely end to this issue, as the plot started in one point and unexpectedly ended in another angle that will surprise readers. Another issue that should be picked up by many.”

• Comic Culture: “I am absolutely blown away by whatever this creative team is able to do with this character. It’s something new and fresh and unique every single time…As always, the interior artwork is absolutely incredible. The coloring is fantastic as well.”

• Comic Patrol: “As a one-shot, this was absolutely fantastic. You don’t need any other issues, you can just pick this up and go for it. Gorgeous art and incredible storytelling…It’s the best book on the shelves.”

• Conan Fans: 8.9/10 “This tale is full of beautiful, contrasting colors. I love the vintage-esque feel, yet it’s modern…Nice job guys. Buy a copy.”

• Cool Thunder: 9/10 “Simply put, this is exactly what you want from a sword-and-sorcery comic. Doug Braithwaite’s artwork and Diego Rodriguez’s colors have not missed a beat throughout this entire run…If you’ve been sleeping on this series, this issue is the perfect jumping-on point.”

• Cupcakes Comic Reviews: “[Conan] has been crushing it, probably the best sword and sorcery ongoing book on the stands. It’s on issue 32 and it’s been amazing the whole time.”

• Eternal Crusader: “Doug Braithwaite’s artwork is, unsurprisingly, another visual feast. His intricate linework, rich detail, and expressive faces elevate every page…Diego Rodriguez’s colors beautifully complement Braithwaite’s pencils, while Jim Zub’s rich, almost baroque prose continues to feel like a perfect match for the Hyborian Age AND the artwork.”

• Fanlight Zone: 10/10 “Thirty-Two issues in, what more can we say about how awesome Conan from Titan and Heroic Signatures has been? Jim Zub is absolutely slaying it on this book. This is the best work of his career…These are the types of runs on comics that you dream about. Grab it, love it, read it.”

• Gaming Trend: 8.5/10 “Zub gives a full fantasy quest in a single issue without feeling rushed or unsatisfying”

• League of Comic Geeks: 10/10 “The colors by Rodriguez in this one are off the charts beautiful. He makes things glow that should glow and allows others to simmer in darkness when appropriate…This book was perfect for me and I’ll remember it for quite a while.”

• Old Man Hyborian: “Jim Zub’s standalone story was a welcome treat, I enjoyed it. And Doug Braithwaite’s art was top-notch. He’s doing very well with the artwork…Not one thing wrong with this issue.”

• Pop Culture Philosophers: “A really great, solid story. I feel like Jim Zub has settled into the perfect Robert E. Howard groove to continue the story of Conan the Barbarian and Doug Braithwaite’s artwork is magnificent!”

• Scifi Pulse: 9.7/10 “This issue works beautifully as both a continuation of last month’s story and a launching point for the next chapter in Conan’s journey. The reward Conan receives at the end of the book is left deliberately ambiguous, creating an intriguing hook that leaves readers eager to see where his adventures take him next.”

• Stygian Dogs: “A satisfying one-and-done adventure. It’s succinct, pulpy, and packed with bone-splintering action wonderfully depicted by Doug Braithwaite…It’s a nice break from the longer arcs and the Black Stone journey.”

• Thinking Critical: “It’s a strong recommend for Conan the Barbarian for me. It continues to be one of the best in in the industry…Jim Zub, has nailed down this character.”

• Two Guys and a Stack of Comics: “You could pick up an issue like this and it just blew me away – The completeness of the story and the brevity of it in one comic and how rich it was. It was so beautifully crafted…The artwork is just breathtaking.”

• Unc Blerd: “When I read Conan books I seldomly get emotionally attached to the characters, but this was so well written that you really felt empathy for this mysterious woman by the end of it”

Zubby Newsletter #161: Pre-Texas

Lost Knob, Texas was a small town in REH’s stories modeled after Cross Plains.
Art from Conan: Battle of the Black Stone #0 by Jonas Scharf and Jao Canola.

It’s a bit of a mad sprint of productivity and packing today as I wrap up a script and then finish getting ready for my flight tomorrow morning to Texas for the Howard Days 40th anniversary, two days of discussion and celebration of the father of sword & sorcery’s legacy in the exact place where Conan the Barbarian‘s tales were first written. I attended the festival for the first time back in 2024 and you can read how that went HERE.

As with any convention or signing, I’m a mix of nervous and excited. Last time I attended it had been less than a year since our big relaunch at Titan and now it’s the third year of big swings and stories I’m really proud of, so I’m curious how all that’s been received by the intensely passionate fanbase who attend this event. I guess I’m about to find out.

I’ll arrive in Cross Plains late afternoon Thursday and be there through Saturday night. Looking forward to seeing friends and meeting new people coming in for the big anniversary gathering.

I’ll also be signing throughout the event. No charge, but donations encouraged, with all proceeds going to the Howard House fund underway to help with repairs. Same goes for items I’ll be donating to the silent auction.

No ticket is required to attend the festivities, so if you’re in Texas and able to make the trek, consider coming out to Cross Plains to celebrate with us or, if you’re closer to Dallas, come to my signing at Madness Games & Comics happening this Sunday from 11:30am-3pm.

Laudator Temporis Acti

Reading online posts that go on about how “my generation is the best because we persevered through [moment in time], had [pop culture things], didn’t fall for [current trendy pitfall] and life was better because [random item] only cost [cheap compared to now]!” always makes my eyes roll, especially when it’s about my generation.

Even more painful are the “my generation learned how to work hard because we didn’t have [current technology] or parents who [do current parental thing] and weren’t coddled with [respectful current social norm]!” posts.

Congrats, you’ve discovered nostalgia.

It doesn’t make you unique or your cohort some awe-inspiring generation better than all others.

Truly, the time you grew up in was the most special, you main character of your own story you. What an incredible coincidence.

Notice that every generation before or after you posts the exact same shit.

Nostalgia and remarking on how things have changed is fine (and can even be useful and important), just have enough clarity to realize it’s rooted in your personal experience, not a universal truth.

The big reason life felt simpler or more difficult is because you were a kid. You probably had more free time and less responsibilities. You were starting to self actualize and went through puberty.

It’s your story and it matters deeply to you, so you want it to matter to everyone else too.

As immensely fucked up right now is for adults, kids growing up in the midst of this will tell future generations it was the best time because now (the future) sucks compared to their youth.

I am thankful I grew up pre-social media and didn’t have to start my career in this current market, but that’s fortunate timing not generational superiority.

Script to Page

I’ve added even more FREE material to my Patreon page, including scripts for all the Conan Free Comic Book Day issues so you can see what I wrote and how that was interpreted by artists Jonas Scharf, Ivan Gil, and Jesus Merino over the past three years.

If you want access to well over 300 story pitches, scripts, and other resources in my Patreon archive, you can join for less than the price of a fancy coffee.

Survival in the Exiled Lands

My fourth liveplay session of Conan Exiles Enhanced was a relatively relaxed affair, rebuilding my resources and equipment after getting my butt kicked the week before. I answered some questions about writing and bantered with people who watched live.

Zubby Newsletter #159: Fight, Fight, FIGHT!

Huge thanks to everyone who reached out with birthday well wishes after last week’s newsletter. It’s a weird feeling hitting one of those milestone numbers that society perceives as getting old and still just feeling like me, but I guess that’s the trick of it all. It was nice hearing from so many old friends and fans.

Conan the Barbarian #31 cover art by Doug Braothwaite. Colors by Diego Rodriguez.

This week finally sees the release of CONAN THE BARBARIAN #31, the climax of our 3-part story centered on the new assassin called ‘The Son of the Tooth’. When I came up with the concept for this confrontation, I pitched it to editor Chris Butera in pretty simple terms-

“If manga can have fight scenes that stretch on for 100+ pages, we should be able to do a 22-page wall-to-wall fight issue of Conan.”

And he excitedly agreed, so get ready for a knockdown, drag-out, mano a mano battle of brutality between our supernaturally-charged killer and the world’s most famous sword & sorcery hero. Artist Doug Braithwaite and colorist Diego Rodriguez delivered another stunner that is viscerally violent right up to the finish line.

You obviously want to see how this sequence plays out, don’t you?

Head to your favorite comic shop this week and find out!

Catching Up in Collection

As if that wasn’t enough excitement, this week also sees the release of our CONAN: SCOURGE OF THE SERPENT and SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN vol. 4 trade paperbacks. Couple that with last week’s release of CONAN THE BARBARIAN vol. 7: THE CONQUERING CROWN and you are set for sword & sorcery in the month of May, my friends.

Fun fact: This is my first volume 7 of any series I’ve written. Previous runs have all capped out at volume 6 or less.

Feels good, and there’s a lot more to come in the Hyborian Age. Huge thanks to the whole creative team and the crews at Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics. It’s an honor to be part of this team.

Conan is Running Out of Time

I had an amazing time chatting with Shawn Curley over on the official Conan the Barbarian YouTube channel all about the past, present, and future of our Conan publishing plans. Lots of anecdotes that cover planning and production, working with our team, and how exciting it is to have all this momentum while our third year of publishing roars onward.

I also put together a 1-minute sneak peek from the interview you can check out HERE.

Talk, Talk, Talk!

Lots of interviews popping up online last week.

I did a 60-min livestream interview with World At War Comics that was a lot of fun.

And then an interview I recorded a few weeks ago finally surfaced on the Dollar Bin Bandits YouTube channel as well.

Draw Your Weapons at Gen Con!

Last week also saw the announcement that I’ll be one of the special guest stars for DRAW YOUR WEAPONS Live at Gen Con in August, alongside wonderful gamer nerdlebrities Alicia Marie, Anjali Bhimani, and Jason Charles Miller with Game Master Josh Knapp! Want to get a feel for what it’s all about? Watch the trailer for the series HERE.

Zubby Newsletter #153: Tides of War

Last time I mentioned that I needed to have a productive writing week to keep up with projects I have on the go and, thankfully, it was a really good one. I hit a strong writing flow and knocked down some much-needed project milestones. As much as I can get writing done while I travel, having uninterrupted writing time here in my studio works best.

It’s Final Order Cut-Off day for the CONAN: SCOURGE OF THE SERPENT trade paperback so, if you haven’t pre-ordered yet, today is your last chance to ensure a copy is waiting for you before the print run is finalized.

What is Set the Snake God’s plan for humanity and, now that it’s begun, can it be stopped?

Scourge of the Serpent is a major pillar in our grand mythic plan for Conan so, if you haven’t had the chance to read it yet, do not miss out!

All that said, Scourge was our 2025 Conan Fall event so now we start turning our attention toward this year’s sword & sorcery blockbuster: TIDES OF THE TYRANT-KING!

Want a little sneak peek at Tides? Let’s do it-

Artist Jesus Merino is delivering absolutely top notch line art on this event mini-series, pushing himself on every single page. I am blown away by his confident cinematic staging and just how damn solid everything looks. He has a very distinct vision for the Hyborian Age, built on the foundation of classic Bronze Age Conan comics, but isn’t afraid to give it his own spark as well.

Look at that simmering Cimmerian gaze!

This is the iconic sellsword barbarian in his prime ready to kick ass but, just as we’ve done with our previous event mini-series, there will be twists and turns aplenty to keep you engaged and guessing as the adventure unfolds.

Make sure you tell your favorite local comic retailer you want a copy of our Free Comic Book Day CONAN: TIDES OF THE TYRANT-KING Prelude issue on Saturday, May 2nd!

Megacon Chatter

Speaking of Cimmerians, I had an engaging chat with Matt from The Comic Book Guy YouTube channel when I was at Megacon a couple weeks ago. It was noisy on the convention floor, so the focused audio is a bit tinny, but we cover a lot of great stuff in and around working on the series.

Talking with G33K HQ

I also had an extensive interview with Robbie over at G33K HQ. We obviously talk about Conan the Barbarian, but also cover a bunch of other titles and projects, including Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, Skullkickers, MAD about DC, Journey to the West, and important advice for working in the business.

Sometimes Messy

Every part of the no/clip making of documentary on Disco Elysium is well worth watching, but part 6 is the end and it carries mixed feelings on the highs and lows tied to creating this strange and brilliant game:

I’ve been part of creative collaborations that forge lifelong friendships and others that poison relationships and leave scars. It’s such a hard thing to explain to people outside these creative whirlwinds. They’re wonderful, terrible experiences.

You hope you get to be part of something so intense and meaningful, to collaborate with passionate and skilled people like that, but that dedication can leave a lot of damage in its wake. In the end, Disco Elysium is a beautifully twisted game that contains multitudes. It’s a dichotomy of low brow and high brow concepts, philosophy and politics set against nihilism and entropy.

Rambling jazzy pompous poetry that shouldn’t work but somehow does.

For better or for worse, it’s a fragile messy game made by fragile messy people.

Zubby Newsletter #149: Big Collections

I’ve been keeping this one secret for quite some time, but am happy to have it finally show up in advance book catalogues – WAYWARD is being collected in a beautiful one volume Compendium edition this September!

The Wayward Compendium arrives in September with
new cover artwork by Steven Cummings and Tamra Bonvillain!

WAYWARD is a creator-owned comic series I co-created with the amazing artist Steven Cummings that ran for 30 issues from 2014 to 2018. It’s a bit like ‘Buffy in Japan’, with teenagers fighting against Japanese mythological monsters on the streets of modern Tokyo while struggling with their personal drama and newfound supernatural powers.

These characters are near and dear to my heart and the series launched at a time when Image Comics was going through a renaissance with new titles that grabbed attention and made waves. I’ve always been proud of what Steven, Tamra, Zack, Marshall and I were able to accomplish, showcasing real Japanese places and historical myths without leaning too hard on manga tropes or pacing.

Some of the original trade paperbacks and deluxe hardcovers have fallen out of print so it’ll be nice to have it available for readers to enjoy and share in one complete volume. Make sure you pre-order and tell your friends!

Earth’s Mightiest Collection

The Avengers: No Surrender/No Road Home Omnibus

Speaking of great looking collections, the AVENGERS: NO SURRENDER/NO ROAD HOME Omnibus is now in stores, collecting the weekly epic events I co-wrote with Mark Waid and Al Ewing, with artwork by the incomparable Pepe Larraz, Kim Jacinto, Paco Medina, and Sean Izaakse.

I received my contributor copy in the mail late last week and, the minute I cracked it open, a flood of wonderful memories came back, a special milestone in my creative career. When we were plugging away on these stories it really felt like we were the Avengers, banding together to tackle a massive story and wild deadlines we never could have overcome as individuals.

I learned so much working on these events and hearing from readers that it’s considered a ‘modern classic’ means a lot. I’d love to write more of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes at some point down the road but, whatever happens, this collection is great to have available.

Robert E. Howard Award Nominations

The Robert E. Howard Foundation has posted their ballot for the 2026 REH awards and books I worked on snagged 3 nominations:
• The Hyrkanian—Outstanding Achievement, Essay
– “Shadows of the Serpent: Howard, Kull and the Birth of Sword and Sorcery”, Jeff Shanks in Conan: Scourge of the Serpent #1-4
• The Rankin—Artistic Achievement
– Jim Zub, Ivan Gil, João Canola, Tyler Smith, and Richard Starkings, for Conan: Scourge of the Serpent
– Jim Zub, Alex Horley, Tyler Smith, and Richard Starkings for Conan the Barbarian #25, “The Nomad”

The competition is really tight this year, but that just means we’re enjoying a surge of Howard-related works so I couldn’t be happier. Best of luck to all the nominees!

High Points at Fantastic Comic Fan

• Do you remember the first time a comic made you feel seen?
• What was your first “I can’t believe this is my job” moment?
• What is your favorite sound effect you’ve written?
• Which of your characters feels most like family to you now?
• If a character you worked on could walk through Artist Alley at ECCC, what would they say?
• What is the weirdest or most wonderful thing that you’ve ever signed?
• What can comics do that no other artform can?
• Which character you’ve worked on would bomb a panel Q&A?
• What is your go-to snack when deadlines are closing in?
• When you think of ECCC, what feeling comes to mind?
• What does it mean to see fans still showing up for comics after all these years?
• What is one thing you hope fans take away from ECCC this year?
• Finish this sentence, “Comics will always matter because-“

Zubby Newsletter #145: A Traitor to the Crown

Last week’s newsletter was a monster, with lots of stuff to cover, so let’s keep this one more under control-

Excerpt from Conan the Barbarian #28 – “Better a traitor to the crown than to slay one’s own kin in cold blood.”

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #28 arrived in stores last week and I was thrilled to see how many reviewers had it as their Pick of the Week. Our team put their all into this wartorn storyline and I’m so glad readers keyed into what we were going for while we filled in a crucial gap of Conan’s history.

As we’ve been doing throughout the series (and how Robert E. Howard did it in the original Weird Tales stories in the 1930’s), we’ll keep jumping around Conan’s timeline, so our next story arc returns to pre-King adventures, but I definitely have big plans for future stories with the mighty monarch of Aquilonia.

One of the other things I’ve been seeing lately is the good word of mouth online leading to more readers getting on board with volume one and excitedly catching up. Having that clear entry point for the series and our whole publishing line is something that so easily gets lost with rebooted issue #1’s and I’m hopeful that if we keep going on this trajectory we’ll build something that lasts, a run worthy of the world’s greatest sword & sorcery hero.

Game Day

Post-Filming Pic with the Dungeon Dudes Crew: Me, Joe, Monty, Kelly, and TroySteel/Mickey.

I spent yesterday in studio with the Dungeon Dudes filming a few episodes of a TTRPG Actual Play one-shot adventure, which was a fun way to start the week. More details and footage should be coming later this month.

Beyond spending a whole day gaming and laughing with great people, the other unexpected advantage was being too busy to check social media at all. I came home and realized how nice it felt, before reengaging in updates about the current merry-go-round of garbage that is world news.

Introducing Cap, As Only Chip Can

Last week I mentioned that Zdarsky was unable to attend the Captain America (1990) screening so I stepped in for him, but he also sent along a video introduction of his own, which is as Chip as you might expect-

At the same time, Amazon announced a Sex Criminals TV show, which is surprising, amazing, and about fuckin’ time (literally, it’s about people who stop time when they have sex and use the time freeze to rob banks), so big congrats to his Chipness and Matt Fraction.
